kandy

Located amid lush green hills in the Central Province, Kandy is Sri Lanka's second largest city. According to folklores, this city was developed in the Gapola era during the reign of king Wickramabahu III. The Sinhalese rulers had a stronghold on this city and promoted its rich culture, until the British took over in 1815. There are many stories associated with the city's name, one of which states that it was named after Senkada, a hermit who lived in the area. Dotted with picturesque lakes, beautiful gardens, historical edifices and a number of shrines, Kandy is one of the favourite haunts of globetrotters visiting Sri Lanka. However, the place is most renowned for Esala Perahera – an annual festival during which the city streets are flooded with dancers, drummers and caparisoned elephants, it is thus claimed to be the cultural capital of the nation.
